Installing natural gas appliances

Installation of natural gas appliances, or service and maintenance work on any part of the gas system, must only be done by a licensed gas fitting contractor who is required to carry a licence issued by the Office of Consumer & Business Affairs (OCBA).

The gas fitter is required to issue you with a Certificate of Compliance on completion of any new installations or alterations/extensions to existing gas services.

Pipe and appliance installations must comply with Australian Standard AS 5601. If you feel that the completed work is unsafe or unsatisfactory contact the gas fitter who installed or serviced the equipment and ask for the problem to be fixed, or if this is not successful, contact the equipment supplier. If neither of these avenues are successful, contact the Gas Regulation Section of the Office of the Technical Regulator.

Mains power electrical work required when installing a natural gas appliance must be done by a licensed electrical contractor.

Gas instantaneous (or continuous flow) water heaters should not be installed in bathrooms or rooms with limited ventilation.

Never install or use unflued natural gas appliances in bedrooms or bathrooms.
