From 1 July 2008, water heaters installed into most homes in South Australia will need to be low emission types such as high efficiency gas, solar or electric heat pump. Also, shower outlets connected to the installed water heater will need to be water efficient.

For home owners, including landlords, this site will help you determine what type of water heater your plumber can install next time you need to. Please note operational water heaters do not need to be replaced until they reach the end of their working life.
Water heating is typically the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in a home. As shown in the graph below, high efficiency gas, solar and electric heat pump water heaters have emissions of around one third of those of a conventional electric water heater. Using more efficient hot water systems will save you energy, water and money.
