Overview

Two of the most fundamental energy challenges facing South Australia are:

Demand management (DM) has the potential to make a significant contribution to addressing these challenges.

Demand management involves all energy management activities downstream of centralised generation and transmission and includes:

Demand management can deliver the following benefits:

The objective of DM activities is to flatten (and lower) the demand curve, so that the peak load is reduced in relation to the average load. This should result in greater system reliability, lower electricity prices and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Overview

In October 2001, the State Government established the Electricity Demand Side Measures Task Force to identify measures to help reduce the State's demand for electricity, particularly at times of summer peak demand. The Task Force was chaired by John Eastham and comprised members from industry, consumer and commercial groups, the public and government.  During the course of its work, the Task Force sought submissions from the public and, in April/May 2002, carried out a range of public consultations to discuss some of the key issues raised and proposed strategic directions. The Final Report of the Task Force was presented to the State Government on 12th June 2002.

Submissions from Industry and the Community
