New housing in SA is required to achieve a 5 star energy performance rating.

These requirements are consistent with the requirements in most other states and are expected to be introduced nationally in the future.

Commercial Buildings

Energy efficiency standards for commercial buildings are being developed by the building industry through the Australian Building Energy Council (ABEC).

A Building Greenhouse Rating Scheme is being promoted nationally through State Government's to assist building owners and tenants assess the efficiency of their premises. Developed by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) of NSW, the scheme provides both base building and tenancy ratings of between 1 and 5 stars.
