Household Appliances

Energy rating labels and minimum energy performance standards for domestic appliances and industrial and commercial equipment are being introduced progressively in all States and Territories through the National Appliance and Equipment Energy Efficiency Program (NAEEEP).

When you buy a fridge, freezer, air conditioner, dishwasher, or clothes washer or drier, it must have an energy rating label which rates the efficiency of the appliance with a number of stars. It also shows how much energy it will use when tested to the Australian Standard. If you choose the appliance with the highest star rating, you'll minimise your energy consumption.

Minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for fridges and freezers, hot water services, packaged air conditioners, electric motors and lighting systems are being developed and progressively introduced through the National Appliance and Equipment Energy Efficiency Program (NAEEEP) which involves all States and Territories. The MEPS program means that appliances with very low efficiencies will no longer be sold in Australia.

You can get more information about appliances and MEPS at Energy Use and Appliances and Energy Rating Labels.
