Appliances

Every household in the state has a range of electrical appliances. An electrical appliance is any device which needs to be connected to the household electricity supply and includes such items as whitegoods, power tools, portable household appliances, and hot water services. Electrical appliances are manufactured locally or interstate, or imported from overseas.

For more information please visit the Appliance web page.

Electricity Infrastructure

The Technical Regulator is responsible for the monitoring and regulation of safety and technical standards in the electricity supply industry (generation, transmission and distribution) and the administration of the provisions of the Electricity Act 1996 relating to clearance of vegetation, buildings and structures from powerlines.

For more information please visit the Electricity infrastructure page.

Recalls

Under the Gas Act 1997 and the Electrical Products Act 2000, the Technical Regulator monitors failures of gas appliances and components used in gas installations and infrastructure and electrical products and, if necessary, implements action to remove hazardous products from the market place. Responsible product suppliers (including manufacturers and importers) generally initiate a voluntary recall when a product poses a hazard. For details of products recalled, guidelines as to how to conduct a product recall and other information, go to http://www.recalls.gov.au Link to an external web site.

For more information please visit the recalls page.

Installations

The Technical Regulator is responsible for the monitoring and regulation of safety and technical standards with respect to electrical installations. The technical standards are designed to ensure that an electrical installation is safe to connect to the electricity supply and safe to use. The tradespeople carrying out this work have to be appropriately licensed and are required to issue an Electrical Certificate of Compliance. The Technical Regulator administers and audits the Electrical Certificates of Compliance Scheme to ensure the safety of consumer's installations.
