The Greenhouse Gas Abatement Program (GGAP) is a major Commonwealth Government initiative to assist Australia in meeting its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The objective of GGAP is to reduce Australia's net greenhouse gas emissions by supporting activities that are likely to result in substantial emission reductions or substantial sink enhancement, particularly over the first Kyoto commitment period of 2008 to 2012. $400 million has been allocated to the Program. Following reprofiling of the GGAP under the Federal Government Budget in 2002-03, the $400 million funding is expected to be committed over five years rather than the original four years. Grants under Rounds 1 and 2 of GGAP have already been approved for up to a total of $155 million. Registration for Round 3 has now closed.
