About the Energy Concession

Applying

What is the Energy Concession?

The SA Energy Concession is a concession funded by the South Australian Government to reduce the cost of energy to eligible customers. On 1 January 2004 the SA Government increased the SA Energy Concession from $70 per year to $120 per year.

The Government provides the Energy Concession through a rebate of $120 per year to all eligible South Australian consumers who are connected to the electricity grid. The concession is provided through a reduction to the consumer's electricity bill, for administrative simplicity. Even though the concession is applied through the electricity bill, it is a concession for household energy consumption, be it in the form of gas or electricity.

Am I eligible for an energy concession?

Self Funded Retirees

I am a self funded retiree; can I get the Energy Concession?

To receive the SA Energy Concession you must hold a valid concession card, which includes the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.

If you do not have a valid concession card then you are not eligible for the SA Energy Concession. (refer to question 2)

I am a self-funded retiree but do not have a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, what should I do?

To apply for a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card simply contact Centrelink to determine if you are eligible. If you are not entitled to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or another recognised health card (refer to question 2) you will, unfortunately, not be eligible for the SA Energy Concession.

There are still benefits to be gained from shopping around and transferring to a market contract. Independent advice to assist you on price comparisons is available from the Essential Services Commission of South Australia's telephone advisory service on 1800 226 100.

For more information about the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card you can contact Centrelink This link opens up in a new window on 13 2300.

About Market Contracts

How do I know if I am on a market contract?

All contracts with retailers other than AGL are market contracts. With AGL, some contracts are standard contracts and others are market contracts.

All AGL customers are on a standard contract unless they have explicitly changed to another electricity deal. These are market contracts. AGL market contracts state "market contract" at the bottom of the bill.

Where can I obtain information on electricity prices and market contracts?

By calling the Essential Services Commission of South Australia's telephone advisory service on (freecall) 1800 226 100 you can obtain a written comparison of your electricity bill under each of the retailer's market contracts. All you need is your most recent electricity bill, although having your four most recent electricity bills will give a more accurate comparison.

Alternatively, you can do your own comparison of retail electricity offers by using the "Estimator" which is available on the Essential Services Commission's website. This link opens up in a new window
